Margaret Whyte vive y trabaja en Montevideo, Uruguay. Integra desde sus inicios la Fundación de Arte Contemporáneo/FAC. Ha recibido numerosos premios y distinciones e incursionado en distintos lenguajes y múltiples soportes: pintura, instalaciones, intervenciones y esculturas blandas donde utiliza objetos encontrados y materiales diversos. Ha realizado exposiciones individuales y colectivas, en Uruguay, Argentina, México, España, Holanda, Suiza y Bélgica.

Comenzó su actividad artística en 1972 en el Círculo de Bellas Artes de Montevideo. Estudió con Clarel Neme, Jorge Damiani, Amalia Nieto, Rimer Cardillo, Hugo Longa y Fernando López Lage. Integra desde sus inicios la Fundación de Arte Contemporáneo FAC.Su obra comprende pinturas, esculturas blandas, instalaciones e intervenciones en sitios específicos, Whyte evoca la memoria de los materiales que utiliza, fragmentos de vestidos, manteles y colchas brindan un intenso colorido a sus obras textiles en las que cuestiona los ideales de belleza y sus rituales, como forma de revalorizar lo estético independientemente de lo bello.
Sus ensamblajes son acumulaciones y capas de cortes y rasgados, envueltos, atados y cosidos, que proponen una reflexión sobre la situación de la mujer, la belleza, la moda y su lógica mercantil. Whyte declara trabajar con todo aquello que la conmueve, con la naturaleza de las cosas, persiguiendo una necesidad de encontrarlas, unirlas y compararlas.
En 2014 recibió el Premio Figari a la trayectoria, otorgado por el Ministerio de Educación y Cultura y el Banco Central del Uruguay y en 2021 el 59 Premio Nacional de Artes Visuales recibió su nombre, como reconocimiento a su carrera.

Margaret Whyte was born in Montevideo, where she lives and works.
She began her artistic career in 1972 at the Círculo de Bellas Artes (Fine Arts Circle) in Montevideo. Her assemblages accumulate layers of cuts and tears, wrapped, tied, and sewn: a reflection on the situation of women, beauty, fashion, and its mercantile logic. Whyte states that she works with everything that moves her, with the nature of things and a need to find them, unite them, and compare them.
In 2014, she received the Figari Lifetime Achievement Award, granted by the Ministry of Education and Culture and the Central Bank of Uruguay. In 2021, the 59th National Visual Arts Award was named after her in recognition of her career.
